What to Eat in Agios Dimitrios Zarakas

A local introduction to village dishes, olive oil, honey and the language of the table.

Why go

The food here begins with what the land gives: olives, wild greens, herbs, grapes and milk from sheep and goats. Look for goges, handmade pasta with local cheese, or sayitia, pastry filled with greens. Honey finds its way into sweets such as lalagites and samousades. These are flavours of everyday village life, and we hope you have the chance to try them while you are here.

Plan it from Agios Dimitrios

The village square is an easy evening walk from the retreat. Ask what is cooked that day rather than expecting every traditional dish on every menu. If you have dietary needs, explain them directly and check ingredients with the kitchen.

With thanks to Dr Dimitra Kamarinou, who restored this house and shared her knowledge of the region with us.

Make a stay of it

Set out from Sparta Gaia.

Return to the village after a day by the sea or in the mountains.
